On George Washington

Lately, I’ve been reading Washington: A Life, by Ron Chernow and thoroughly enjoying it. But, the other day, I came across this little account of how Washington dealt with a riot within the ranks of the Continental Army, during the early days of the Revolution.

a fierce struggle commenced with biting and gouging on the one part, and knockdown on the other part with as much apparent fury as the most deadly enemy could create. Reinforced by their friends, in less than five minutes, more than a thousand combatants were on the field, struggling for the mastery. At this juncture General Washington made his appearance, whether by accident or design I never knew. I only saw him and his colored servant [Billy Lee], both mounted. With the spring of a deer, he leaped from his saddle, threw the reins of his bridle ino the hands of his severant, rushed into the thickest of the melee, and with an iron grip seized two tall, brawny, athletic, savage-looking riflemen by the throat, keeping them at arm’s length, alternately shaking and talking to them. In this postion the eye of the belligerents caught sight of the general. Its effect on them was instantaneous flight at the top of their speed in all directions from the scene of the conflict. Less that fifteen minutes time had elapsed from the commencement of the row before the general and his two criminals were the only occupants of the field of action. Here, bloodshed, imprisonment, trials by court-martial were happily prevented and hostile feelings between the different corps of the army extinguished by the physical and mental energies timely exerted by one individual.

I was on twitter, like every day or every other day, and I was troubled by the fact that in the proper spin of things, supposedly “advanced” thinking and “logic” could set one up for some rather nasty conclusions that are counter-productive, if not outright hypocritical, of an established outlook or philosophical hypothesis.

Namely, I was going through the Washington Post’s tweets and headlines from today and earlier it mentioned how “9 out of 10 black women turn to religion in times of turmoil” [paraphrased]. http://t.co/kVUx53Vq Then, later, I read another tweet in which it had been noted Richard Dawkins said, “you don’t need God to be good.” http://t.co/NDq3hQNW

I guess, really, I’m just a bit distressed at how an irrational individual, claiming human reason, would argue about the in-born superstition and intellectual inferiority of black women, already a socially marginalized individual. After all, it’s Richard Dawkins who goes around very bluntly naming his book The God Delusion and making cases for a belief in God being a mental defect.

My only immediate thought is that, prior to this, it was argued that black slaves needed to be weened off of their pagan and nature-worship practices and indoctrinated with Christian belief. Something that’s been “frowned upon” as being religious bigotry and ethno-centric. It’s not that radical a leap of thinking to possibly see a similar mindset emerge today in our, self-proclaimed, “advanced” society.

That “~~Council~~ Tribunal exposition guy” is Senator Stampington. He also voices Dethklok’s sown back together wrong chef, Jean Pierre.

Young Justice Comics May 2012

I know it’s misleading to use that, considering I don’t even read the (not quite as good)Young Justicetie-in comic series for the super-awesome animated series. But, if I do ever pick up any of the other comics that represent the younger generation of superheroes in the DCnU, it would be applicable. For now, however, let’s just dig into:

Teen Titans #8

I have to scratch my head at all this. For one, even though I barely know anything about the character of Omen, someone who was around before the post-Flashpoint relaunch, I’m not exactly taken with this rebooted version. Boy, I could say that about a lot of things, couldn’t I?

I dig the concept of the blind-prophetess, though. That’s rather interesting. But, that’s about it. Again, I’m casting about in this series for any hope spots. The whole thing is loaded down with angst, brooding and very, very dark colors. What few moments I get to enjoy with our “sunny” characters in Bunker, Solstice and Kid Flash are just too far and few in-between. Not in that I want more of those characters. Just their characteristics. Everyone here needs to literally brighten up.

Aside from the overall costume design for Omen that I’m not grooving with, I’m rather put off by her Matrix-style mind-screws that have the potential to set-up a huge number of ass-pull saving throws for the writers: making every defeat seem more like a simulation/dream that will let us get away with cheapening the threat of death and violence. To that end, I notice that we’ve had three villains within these eight books who’ve been based around psychic manipulation show up. So, yeah, I’m worried our super-heroics will get lost in cloudy haze of “psychadelic trips” rather than genuine clever turns and twists of fate.

I’m rather disappointed in some of the artwork here, as well. I noted that Bunker and Solstice seemed to look older than they actually are. A particular example lept out at me while the two were trying to comfort each other, with Bunker’s face seeming rather bloated and wrinkled in a way that doesn’t fit a young adult.

Meanwhile, I’m rather disappointed that we didn’t get to flesh out any one of these character backgrounds or plot-threads in this issue. It seemed like Omen was dropping a rather clumsy block of exposition on us by simply prying away at everyone’s mind and telling us what they’re supposed to be troubled by. This would have been better in future installments where the team actually bonds. Not where they get “psionically molested” (seriously, DC, what the fuck???) and tossed into Tron costumes.

Sadly, I spoiled some of the endgame for this arc by reading some of the developments in the other tie-in books for a kind of crossover where N.O.W.H.E.R.E. and Harvest put together a new Ravagers team. This was through the courtesy of Linkara from Atop the 4th Wall and his twitterfeed. And, I must side with him in the fact that this gloom and doom spoils much of the premise of a teenage group of superheroes who bond through adversity and relate to each other off the battlefield. I hope by the first anniversary of this series, we get to take it easy a while, mellow out and “get to know each other” better. I say this, of course, while wistfully looking over to my copy ofThe NEW Teen Titans Omnibus, Volume 1. Oh, Marv Wolfman, you and George Perez did so well back in your day.

With all this in mind and a sad realization that some of the promise for this series could be turning out badly… I have to be reasonable and hand this issue a rather sad 2 out of 5.

Sonic the Hedgehog Comics May 2012

Okay, I’m aware I’ve been sucking eggs at keeping up with this tumblr review stuff. I mean, REALLY badly sucking at this. But, I think it’s because I’ve been trying to blitz read all this stuff at once. Then it hit me: if I’m already a month behind in these reviews because I can’t do subscriptions still yet and I can only squeeze all these purchases into a monthy thing… Why not just take my time and read a couple books a day, then post a review that day and then do the same thing the next day? Sure as hell will save on “burnout,” that’s for sure.

So, without further delay and with a hope of keeping more on track, here is:

Sonic Universe #40

…Okay… I’ll admit. This wasn’t SO bad. As anyone would know, I generally hate everything that comes with this series, right now. I know I’ve been giving the artwork some credit, but the writing has, and remains, atrocious. I mean, “crimes against literature” bad. But, this is the first time I feel a little pepped by what I’ve seen in one these comics in a long time, though it comes with a few caveats.

The cover’s… decent, at least in a design premise. A fighting game, with a notable shout-out toSonic the Fighters. My only annoyance is with the insistence of putting Sonic on the title, twice. He’s already got the title and he’s a “selectable character” at the bottom of the page. Do we need that much of a reminder whose book this is? Well, don’t answer that, sometimes I wonder, myself.

The story concludes the “Scrambled” story arc with “In the Name of Love!” Yes, if only the would stop in the name of love… of all that is holy and right in the world.

Really, if anyone wanted to see a resurrection of the “Iron Dominion” arc, then two things: one, go jump off a cliff and, second, did you really think that we’d ditch the series’ true main villain? It would have been insulting in all regards if Eggman truly lost this battle. To his credit, it makes him seem more like a capable villain. Which is what a good enemy civil war does: it reasserts who’s top dog and why. Though, I’m getting a touch annoyed that Eggman is starting to sound more and more like Sonic, completely sure of himself thanks to the increasing plot-armor provided him to leave him atop the heap because the script says so. The entire arc has been rather neatly stacked in his favor and he did wreck an entire nation’s military in record time. But, I’m not quite ready to shout “Villain Sue” just yet.

One thing about the fight between Eggman and Snively… Why does he have a ceramic-plastic robot that works like a rubber-band puppet? I mean, there’s “crazy preparedness” and then there’s “pulling stuff out of your ass.” Why go to that length? Wouldn’t steam-driven tech or hydraulics have been just as effective? Okay, so the Iron Queen can use “techno-magic.” But, that only really works on circuitry right? Did she gain the power to control hydraulic pumps? Or steam? Or clockwork gears??? Iron Man’s MK I armor is what he busts out whenever he’s got a foe who can control his more advanced suits purely because it’s not computer driven. We didn’t need something this elaborate to fool a techno-mage. Again, this is where I start to lean toward “Villain Sue.”

Sadly, we did not get to indulge in what would have been my favorite part: brainwashed and crazy, EVIL!Monkey Khan. Seriously, he’s only really fun whenever the Iron Queen is at the wheel. He said “hellacious” back in the day, for crying out loud! Instead, we only get a few lines of his oh-so hamtastic dialogue and he and robot Sally duke it out, mostly off-panel. If this had been better structured, or stretched out for another issue, we could have had more emotional connection to watching two people fighting completely against their wills and the deep romantic connection they’re supposed to share. We come close, though.

We do have that moment where Eggman gives a good “the reason you suck speech” to Khan (boy, that’s ironic, isn’t it???). And Khan’s curt responses have a certain sting to them. See? Sometimes less can be more. When it’s done right.

By issue’s end, I’m highly conflicted. As Eggman says, he’s pretty much gotten quite a bit for all his trouble. Snively’s imprisoned for his betrayals. He knows where Hope is and now, with the United Federation weakened, he can harass her. He’s even got Regina playing “the Game.” So, we’ve established him as a greater threat in one region and we see he’s made progress in his war against the heroes around the world. And yet…

This whole idea of “the Game” is something that, as a meme on the Internet and as a strategy, is quite annoying. Especially when taken to eleven, as shown here. We all know that a master manipulator plays “chess” with his friends and enemies. But, I can never really see where Eggman truly expects this to come out in his favor. The only thing working for him, when all is said and done, is the plot-armor he’s wearing that lets him run the show. Meanwhile, you had a more reliable version of this being played out in the Green Lantern comics with Sinestro beforehand and Atrocitus later on. These characters know that they’re surrounded by some of the worst cutthroats and back stabbers in the Universe. They wanted them to be that way. However, they make it abundantly clear who’s in charge through authority equals ass-kicking rules. You do not try to screw over Sinestro or Atrocitus. As Mongul and Bleez have found out.

My only other gripe is the fact that Sally is, slowly, going from a true potential threat: a former Freedom Fighter who knew how to dismantle the team from the inside out and whose intelligence, once roboticized and reprogrammed, could have made her a walking, talking tactical computer with the “skills” to initiate counter-raids against New Mobotropolis and add a “spy versus spy” dimension to the comics… To a robot-meat-shield for Eggman. Nobody wants to hurt her because, “Oh no, she’s Sally and blah-blah-blah.” Seriously? Cripes. She’s just more plot-armor for the not-so-good Doctor.

It may not have been a great ending, but it was a passable one. At the end of the day, with adequate artwork and some decent scenes involving some credible dialogue and interesting results… I have to be honest and give this thing a 2 out of 5.

Sonic the Hedgehog Comics Apr 2012

Jeez, it feels like a while since I’ve properly regulated myself on this review stuff. But, I don’t really have much I can say for it other than “my bad.” It’s my own fault and I really need to rectify it if I’m going to get this hobby done right. So, let’s kick it off with my personal favorite albatross:Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic Universe #38

I… still do not see the need for brining all of these forgotten and ignored characters out of the wood-work. Ian Flynn has been commiting genocide left and right, “cleansing” out all the characters he’s either gone on record or not so subtly hinted at as believing they take up too much focus and attention from Sonic, whom he’s made nigh invulnerable to the point of dry white toast blandness. Hope Kintobor and the Paladin team are the highest offenders here, given that we can only guess why one would think these people should stop by from their “Bus Trips” to obscurity.

One can only groan at the ham-fisted attempt at drama that’s brought out for Hope and, believe it or not, E-123 Omega. The whole thing is only capped off by the poorly done shout-out to the Imperial Walkers fromStar Warsfame: the “Egg Dromedaries.” And, so help me, if that cover of Eggman with Cubot and Orbot is supposed to be an homage, of sorts, toMystery Science Theater3000, I’ll have to take time to prevent myself from swearing a blood-oath on whoever thought it was a good idea.

For Hope, whom we do not get enough familiarity with to really warrant this attempt to give character development to either her, or Snively, there’s some decent exchanges here and there as we find out Flynn has done yet another retcon: revealing that Snively and Hope are, indeed, half-siblings. It’s odd, not very shocking and doesn’t really change anything. The fact that we just deliver an illusory hope spot that only, ironically, Hope Kintobor believes in does us no good either. We, the readers, know that Snively has no good intentions for his visit here. Which, really, highlights the unimportance of all this. It’s pointless and does nothing to serve the plot in any form or fashion.

Admittedly, one might compliment this issue for showing that Eggman can be a viable threat and could very well crush the United Federation with ease, which he was about to do. But, he backs away and calls it all a “game.” Simply because Snively leaves. In short, this entire waste of resources, senseless damage and violence, and rattling the Federation’s cage is for naught. Why were we really here? What did we really accomplish? And, more importantly, will we be seeing Hope (or the United Federation for that matter) again in the near future? It’s all murky and uninspiring. I can’t even crack any good jokes about it.

Well, maybe one.

E-123 Omega: I was not built for comfort.

That’s okay, Omega, that’s okay. Neither was Ian Flynn. Nor was he built for quality story-telling or giving us many reasons to continue reading this drek.

While I can praise the artwork for it’s on-model detail, I can never fully get behind it as that very good or expressive. Jamal Peppers and several of the artists still working on this title still confuse me as to who is writing this book at any given time since they all look so much alike. Given the moments where I’m supposed to feel hurt for Hope, I really can’t feel the tone I’m supposed to due to the robotic, bland artwork and its lack of true emotional depth.

Yet another Sonic Universestory-arc continues to sputter to mediocre failure with this issue scoring 1 out of 5.

Sonic the Hedgehog #235

Oh, jeez. Silver. AGAIN. My patience is about run out of this particular character. His Quantum Leap-ing story-arc searching for a traitor in the Freedom Fighters has been teased for far too long and gone on much longer than it should for this level of comic book writing. I can only be thankful that Sonic, of all people, gives him the bitch-slapping he so richly deserves. Which, I must admit is what gives this issue some genuine moments of redemption.

The entire issue, for me, addresses a LOT of bad character traits and habits that Flynn has idly let pile up and completely demean and belittle the cast. Rotor grew a pair and quit the government council for their treatment of Nicole and, for once, they’ve been a little less than pleased with themselves for harassing someone that doesn’t deserve it, namely Nicole. It was even good to see Amy and Tails trying to cope through keeping themselves busy with helping others or working on projects for the next mission, respectively.

Sonic, for his part, makes a true about-face while sulking over how he’s been a massive tool towards Antoine who, up until recently, was really standing out to me as a character who’s been both rather heroic, but still vulnerable and noble. His actions during the “Iron Dominion” arc were personally gratifying. And, even though Flynn’s put him in a coma (the alternative to putting him on a bus; or as he’d prefer, RUNNING HIM OVER WITH IT), I must tip my hat to Antoine for his genuine act of courage and heroism. If Flynn brings him back worse for wear, I’ll gladly look back and say, “Well, he would have been better off if Metal Sonic had killed him.”

Sadly, the art ruins this whole affair, once again. The freak-outs and emotional breakdowns by the characters are tame and detached. Yardley (again, I have to check to make sure this isn’t Jamal Peppers, or someone else) and his style with these cute and cuddly-critters has yet to properly convey some of the stronger and, worse, the more subtle emotions requisite for these kinds of stories. Matt Herms and his talent with colors come close with his use of shading and creases to show the faces as they need to be. But, he can only do so much. I strongly insist he’s wasted in this art-team and would be better utilized as the main penciler rather than the main colorist alone.

In the end, while I can give credit to a few genuine moments of good drama and long-overdue and little seen character growth, I can say this was more enjoyable than usual. So, I can only dread where this will get stupid and get stupid QUICK. I mean, after all, Flynn has actually gotten the go-ahead to rip off Marvel Comics with his “Secret Freedom Fighters” initiative here. And, WORST OF ALL, Silver is the first recruit. Even with the few moments I perked up, this grotesque revelation leaves me embittered and groaning, hoping someone will notify Marvel and put an end to this idea before it gets too much further off the ground. Until then, I give this thing 1 out of 5.
